‘A painter who distills the essence of a landscape’
Margaret Crutchley interprets the beautiful and dramatic locations she discovers when travelling through the English countryside.
There is a conscious element of design in her work. By means of simplification, balance, bold colour and expressive marks, Crutchley uses paint to concentrate the visual and emotional experience of a scene on to a two dimensional surface. Crutchley's compositions often move us forwards; perhaps from dark, towards the light or from a silhouetted hedgerow, to a brightly lit area beyond. Crutchley says that her landscapes 'symbolise moving towards a brighter future'.
Crutchley has been selected for a number of prestigious exhibitions, including the Royal Watercolour Society’s Contemporary Watercolour Competition, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours’ at the Mall Galleries, The Hertford Open, Linden Hall, and she has been a prize winner at the Artsdepot Open.
